Termite Infestation

Controlling Termite Infestations

Termites – The Facts

Your home is probably the biggest investment you will ever make. Termites, commonly known as white ants can destroy your home. Protection is vital; something to think about NOW, not later. Remember, it’s never too early to think about termite protection!

termite infestation

There are over 300 species of termites in Australia, and although they are widely known as white ants, they are not ants, but more closely related to cockroaches.

Australia has the most destructive termites in the world. A recent CSIRO survey revealed that more than one in every five homes had termite damage, with an estimated total cost of more than $100 million every year. The vast majority of termite damage in New South Wales is caused by Subterranean Termites, so called because they make their nests in the ground. Termites may be eating away your home, hidden in your walls, or hollowing out the support timbers in your roof. They may also be throughout the sub-floor timbers without you knowing. Termites have deservedly earned themselves the reputation as the most destructive timber pests known to man.

Do not disturb

If you uncover termites, try not to disturb them. AS pulling out flooring boards, architraves, etc. may kill the few termites in those timbers but in doing so you have lessened the chances of an expert effectively treating the nest. They will regroup and probably choose to attack another section of the structure. Control your anxiety; waiting another few days before treatment makes little difference to the extent of the damage caused.

Management

Belmont Pest Control has been controlling termite infestations for over thirty years. We have the experience to save your property from destruction. We can provide protection from termites by using

  • termite dusting powders for nest eradication.
  • conventional chemical barrier treatments around structures
  • or use both in ground and above ground termite monitoring and detection systems.

Once your termite problems are solved, Belmont Pest Control will offer you annual preventative maintenance programs designed to continually control or monitor termites.

Control Methods

Termite dusting procedure

Dusting is the process of applying a dust to the active termite workings. The termites will come into contact with the dust and carry it back to the nest where it will be groomed from their bodies and injected to other termites. If sufficient dust reaches the nest, it will be destroyed. This dusting procedure though, should not be relied upon alone as colony destruction cannot always be assured. After dusting, the termite infestation activity may appear to have ceased however further inspections are required as activity may be found elsewhere.

Termite chemical protection barriers

Chemical barrier treatments are a common form of termite protection for properties. A chemical protection barrier is placed between the structure and the soil. This barrier is to impede and discourage termites from attacking the structure. The installation of barriers often creates some disruption to the site due to the need to trench the soil and drill paths and patios adjoining the structure.

Once in place chemical barriers can provide reasonably effective protection for up to 5 years. However regular inspections are required as these barriers can easily be broken by gardening or other disturbances of the soil or breached by further construction etc.

Termite surveillance “early warning” detection and monitoring system

The Australian Standard AS 3600 – Termite management advises that termites pose a significant economic risk to buildings and structures throughout Australia. Consequently regular monitoring of your property for termite activity is essential. In any given area it is normal for new termite colonies to be establishing or existing colonies to be seeking out new food sources. They may eventually invade your property. For this reason we strongly recommend that you install Termite Monitoring Stations around your property as an early warning system if you wish to care for your property.

The Termite Monitoring System is designed to intercept foraging termites with minimal disturbance allowing more effective control methods to be implemented. Stations are embedded in the soil around the perimeter of your building(s). These are inspected six weekly. When termites are intercepted, an appropriate termite management program can be costed and implemented, usually before termites damage your property.

The System allows for you to check the stations yourself (every six weeks) or alternatively we will inspect the stations for you.
